Music Therapy is the use of music to accomplish therapeutic aims: the restoration, improvement and maintenance of mental, emotional and physical health. Music therapy offers a non-verbal means of communicating, an opportunity for self-expression and an environment which offers a chance for success by increasing social, cognitive, motor and emotional skills. Variety FAR students participate in performances, recitals and musical competitions that enhance their musical experience and motivate their development. Music therapy is offered as either a group or a private activity.

Learn more about Music Therapy from the American Music Therapy website.

Private Music Therapy or Adaptive Music Lessons

Music Therapy is the use of music and musical experiences to attain goals in a variety of areas including communication, academic, cognitive, emotional, motor and social skills. Goals are set according to the student’s individual needs in conjunction with parental input. Adaptive Music lessons incorporate therapeutic as well as musical or performance goals.  Emphasis is on both “process” and “product.”

Therapy and lessons can be for voice or an instrument, including piano, guitar, flute, violin, woodwind instruments, drums, autoharp, recorder, etc. Private therapy and lessons can be scheduled Monday through Saturday. Please call the FAR office to set up a day and time.

Recording Sessions

For those students who have participated in our music programs who may be ready to learn the production aspect of music, we offer the ability to create an audio recording of students’ accomplishments as well as the ability to record a therapist’s accompaniment so that the student can practice a vocal or instrumental solo at home. Please call the Variety FAR office to schedule a day and time.

Song Writing

A creative class for up-and-coming “American Idols.”  Students will work together to write songs and raps for their own musical album.  This class provides a great opportunity to increase social and communication skills.  Offered as a group or private activity.
